Before the War :
Immediately after the World War II, there existed a high political tension between the two superpowers nations, the United States and the Soviet Union. Preexistence of the political pressure gave rise to a war that flourished the four decades after the World War II. The cold war took place in three phases with the first phase taking foot in December 1979. The occurrence of this period is attributed to the fact that the United States alongside the Saudi Arabia and Pakistan soldiers organized and sustained Afghan resistance to the Soviet. |
How the war started :
The primary cause of the first phase of the war was that the United States wanted to block the Soviets from using the Afghanistan as a base for further expansion and also they wanted to prevent the Soviets from adopting the guerrilla war. The Soviets were eventually blocked down, and the phase lasted until 1989 (Kuniholm, p.67). The second phase lasted from 1989 until 2001. During the second phase, forces from the United States did not take part directly but exerted its influence through allies such as Pakistan. The worst of the war happened when an organized group called Taliban took power in 1996 and launched an attack on the U.S facilities abroad.
During the war :
At the time of the war, many developments occurred which affected not only the countries in which the war was taking place but the whole world. The third phase of the cold war and which rings in the mind of many people happened after the al-Qaeda invaded the North House in the United States of America (Bolger, p. 87). Though the American were not actively involved in the in the second phase, the bombing made them launch an attack against Afghan after the Taliban failure to deliver the main culprit of the assault Osama. The Soviet lost the war during the last phase after the Americans were supported by the United Kingdom soldiers and the Northern Alliance Soldiers that comprised of the Muslims from the Afghan nation. During the time of Afghanistan invasion, the American were under the leadership of President George Bush. On the other hand, the Taliban were under the Directorate of Osama bin Laden and the commander Ahmad Shah Massoud.
Motivations After and During the War :
At the time of cold war, the Soviet Union was under the authority of the communist. The Muslims were treated unfairly by the communist leaders who made them turn on their government. By joining the northern alliance force, the Muslims were promised better living standards by the NATO forces which promoted the reason for turning on their government (Heinzig, p.89). Though the war between the two superpowers regions was severe and lead to casualties of many soldiers, both sides were motivated by different facts which result in the war lasting for a long time. The Soviets were determined to hold their city and powers and refrain the capture of their leader Osama by the combination of the American soldiers and the Northern Alliance soldiers. The other side were also motivated by the fact that they wanted to capture the Taliban leader and stop the operations of the terrorist group al-Qaeda (Kenez, p.67). The war had negative impacts on the economy of the word and the region in which the war took place. Destruction of cities and infrastructure was the major side effect of the war. On top of causing the destruction of infrastructures, the war made the fuel prices to rise across the whole world. Conclusively, though the war was associated with the adverse effects the final objective of capturing the terrorist group leader was achieved.
